AUDIENCES LOVE THE
GOURD
 |
"Follow the Drinking
Gourd provides an historical performance that both entertains and educates
their audiences. The group pays tribute to the African American experience
and offers a window into history offering a performance unlike any we have
showcased at the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts. A program by Follow the
Drinking Gourd is an excellent opportunity to hear music of America’s past
while also acknowledging the struggles and trials that shaped the 'Titans
of Song,'" Michael La Riccia, Paul Robeson Center for the Arts,
Princeton
|
 |
"Each year this program
is seen as a highlight for our students and faculty. Follow the Drinking
Gourd are master storytellers and outstanding musicians. Our teachers use
their program as an enhancement to our curriculum and ask that we bring it
back every year. This is a must-see program," Edward Canzanese,
principal, Rosa International Middle School, Cherry Hill |
 |
"Follow the Drinking
Gourd performed 'Titans of Song' at the Princeton Public Library as a
celebration of Paul Robeson's 110th birthday in April 2008. Bass Ivan
Woods, soprano Shannon Hunt, and keyboardist Diane Goldsmith do much more
than perform a concert honoring Paul Robeson and Marian Anderson.
Supplementing the musical examples of Robeson's and Anderson's music with
cultural context in the form of visual images, compelling narrative and
other period music, the three musicians bring an extraordinary depth to
the experience. I loved the whole program," Jan Johnson, Manager of
Youth Services Princeton Public Library |
 |
"The performance of
'On
The Freedom Trail' was a truly wonderful
experience. The audience was very engaged throughout the show,"
Pat Marotta,
Burlington County Cultural & Heritage Commission. |
 |
"The
audience loved” the On the Freedom Trail program, commenting that it was
“lively, fun and informative,"
Sandra Miller, The Free Public Library of Philadelphia. |
 |
"The program
was professional, yet on a level the students could understand and enjoy.
The exposure to different kinds of music and culture was outstanding,"
Betsy Holschuh, principal, Johnson Elementary School, Cherry Hill. |
 |
"Their new 'Titans of
Song' program drew more guests than seats, and just as many
positive comments…a spectacular performance," Sandra Ragonese, Barclay
Farmstead Museum. |
 |
Titans of Song
“beautifully provided a balance of education and entertainment” when
presented at Community College of Philadelphia, Matthew Shupp,
assistant director of student life. |
 |
"When are they going
to perform again?" was a comment often heard after a Haddonfield
performance for the Marian Anderson Music Guild, Ramona Chainey, guild
vice president. |
 |
"The audience
recognized the 'Titans of Song' program as one of excellence - the
selections and arrangements, vocalists and accompanist and narrative…Thank
you for educating and inspiring us," Nancy Schwartz, secretary, Cherry
Hill Historical Commission. |
